EMPOWER SHEEPSHEAD is a neighborhood organizing vehicle to give residents and business owners the tools they need to create change and build lasting community.

Founded in 2013 with the generous support of the Brooklyn Recovery Fund, the Empower Sheepshead website is a place to sign up for volunteer opportunities, launch and fund community projects, learn how to recruit and organize neighbors, and discover inspiring ideas to improve the quality of life for residents.

We sprung out of the devastation of Superstorm Sandy, where we saw Sheepshead Bay’s sister communities along the Brooklyn coastline respond faster and obtain vital resources because of the vibrancy of their pre-existing civic life.

Sheepshead Bay’s core volunteer neighborhood organizations were all based on the waterfront and faced uncertainty. Meanwhile, there was little means for the bulk of the community to reach out and help their neighbors rebuild, which slowed our recovery.

That’s the idea behind Empower Sheepshead: to reignite civil life and neighborhood pride, and put in place a network of neighbors able and willing to respond in the next disaster.

To do that, we’ll be partnering up to direct resources, hold workshops and provide the infrastructure necessary to reclaim our community.
